"El Arte del Tiempo" Season

Creative video came to the Basque Country through festivals. Chronologically, the first was the Video Festival (1982-1984) organised as part of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, which was followed by the Vitoria-Gasteiz Music Video Festival (1985) and was provided with continuity through events in other fields: the popular Bideoaldia in Tolosa (1986–1990) and the Getxo Video Festival (1988). Among the many activities that sprung up around these festivals, it is worth mentioning that much of the San Sebastián content was broadcast by Euskal Telebista, with Hasier Etxeberria directing the cultural programme Fahrenheit.

From all of this, there arose some incipient production – both Basque and Spanish. Technological resources were scarce and inspiration disorderly, so videos might just as easily be like international videos as be based on new technologies or, even, be in the institutional or industrial realm. There were also some works that provided critical guidance during the final stages of the Spanish Transition (Gabriel Villota, Arturo Fito Rodriguez, Marcelo Expósito, Erreakzioa-Reacción, with Estíbaliz Sádaba and Azucena Vieites, etc.). These examples take into account some pioneering precedents of electronic art, such as Encuentros de Pamplona in 1972 or the course organised by José Ramón Sainz Morquillas at the Caja de Ahorros Municipal in Bilbao and taught by the Catalonian group Vídeo-Nou in 1979. Since the end of the 1960s, artists such as Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell and Bruce Nauman had been establishing the bases for a new art, and 1972 was an emblematic date for visual art in Europe and America.

In spite of there already being experience in this new artistic medium, it is significant that the Gure Artea Award would not allow videos to compete until 1996, and also that somewhere as representative as Arteleku would only occasionally provide space and resources for video since its foundation in 1987. Consonni was the entity that—as of 1997—produced videos for artists such as Sergio Prego or Jon Mikel Euba at a time (the end of the nineties) when a new generation was enthusiastically bursting onto the stage of this Fine Arts Museum through the exhibition Gaur Hemen Orain (2001).

But what most concerns us today in this video season, organised on the occasion of the exhibition Después del 68. Arte y prácticas artísticas en el País Vasco 1968-2018 (After 68: Art and artistic practices in the Basque Country 1968–2018), are the new generations of artists that have appeared as of the start of the new millennium. Most of them come from the Faculty of Fine Arts in the Basque Country, like their predecessors, some of them travel and—most significantly—produce in other countries, and they also use mediums that are within their reach and share amongst themselves. They are not concerned with video as a medium in itself, which is a characteristic trait of the previous generation, but use film or television references to use them as they will. That leads to the lengths of the work and certain usages of time, subject matter, the camera and montage. Another important aspect of video nowadays is support from institutional or independent areas with resources—although some are very limited—in both San Sebastián and Bilbao, including Tabakalera, Bulegoa, Bilbaoarte and Consonni. It is not trivial that this season is being promoted by ZINEBI in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao – in fact, it is significant that a programme dedicated to cinema is aligning with art, a relationship with historic roots. All of the sixteen videos that we are presenting as part of this season relate to all of this.
