Throughout its history, ZINEBI – International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao has assembled a valuable archive of documentary, fiction, animated, and experimental films from different sources. The collection dates back to the early decades of the event, particularly from its international recognition by the FIAPF in 1974.
Since 2018, this extraordinary legacy – comprising 339 films produced between 1959 and 2011 on 35 and 16 mm film – are held in the Basque Film Library / Euskadiko Filmategia.
Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE) started to catalogue the collection in 2022; the work has been carried out by a research team headed by Santiago Aguilar and helped by students from different intakes. The work has documented the films and has led to research into the history of the festival, its filmmakers and the international distribution of the works.
ZINEBI would like to thank Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Santiago Aguilar and everyone who has taken part in the project; their work has helped to conserve, research and disseminate a film heritage that belongs to both the festival’s memory and cinema history.
