    WINDOW TO QUEBEC

In association with Instituto Vasco Etxepare and the Quebec Office in Barcelona, the 66th ZINEBI Festival has arranged a special session given over to contemporary Quebec cinema. Thanks to mediation by the Quebec City Film Festival (FCVQ), the International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao is arranging a State premiere of the latest documentary by Quebec photographer and director Pedro Ruiz, Le huitième étage. Jours de révolte, a hybrid work (combining documentary sections and others recreated by actors) about the life and times of a former member of the Front de Libération du Québec, the separatist Jacques Lanctôt, who was sentenced to three years in prison in 1979 for his part in the kidnapping of British diplomat James Richard Cross. The film focuses on the period during which Lanctôt was exiled in Cuba.

The 13th FCVQ gave ZINEBI “carte blanche” for a session to present Basque short films to Quebec cinemagoers – Hirugarren koadernoa (Lur Olaizola, 2022), Kusikozu (Aitor Irulegi, 2023), La mujer ilustrada (Isabel Herguera, 2023), Semana 12 (Isabel Delclaux, 2023) and Ximinoa (Itziar Leemans, 2023).

The exchange was carried out as part of the Québec – Pays Basque Programme created by Etxepare Euskal Institutua and the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communication, for the purposes of developing relations among artists, creators, festivals and cultural agents in both countries.
